About the position

The Mechanical Engineer position within the Energy Group at General Atomics involves designing, developing, and fabricating components and systems for Fusion applications, including ITER and DIII-D. The role requires innovative problem-solving skills to address engineering challenges and involves collaboration with a team to ensure successful project execution.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and develops innovative and practical solutions to design, manufacturing, assembly and testing challenges.
  • Performs functional testing and troubleshooting of equipment and systems in assigned area by utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles.
  • Documents findings, implements solutions and communicates results to engineering staff.
  • Prepares R&D and production plans and directs designers and technicians in the execution of the plans.
  • Develops technical requirements and work scopes for suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Monitors subcontractor's status and progress and apprises management, recommending corrective actions when required.
  • Performs design and finite element analysis of components, assemblies and sub-systems utilizing CATIA, SolidWorks, ANSYS engineering simulation software.
  • Develops design solutions by performing scoping and detailed analyses and iterates to optimize designs and document results.
  • Documents work in calculations and formal reports, technical memos, manuals, and presentations requiring a strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Directs the activities of designers, technicians, and may direct the activities of less experienced technical staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Four or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, or two or more years of experience with a master's degree.
  • Understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts in practice.
  • Experience in developing and verifying requirements for complex engineering challenges, particularly in fusion plasma diagnostic systems and opto-mechanical design.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5 standard for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with analyses including fluid dynamics, heat transfer, structural mechanics and dynamics.
  • Experience with CAD software packages such as CATIA or SolidWorks, and familiarity with FEA analysis tools such as ANSYS is a plus.
  • Strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software is desired.
