About the position

The University of Hawaii is seeking an Engineer for the Administration, Campus Operations & Facilities unit at UH at Manoa. This position is responsible for performing site investigations, feasibility studies, and providing technical consultation and budget estimates for electrical power and lighting systems. The Engineer will also conduct energy audits, manage projects, and ensure compliance with university standards. The role requires a strong background in Electrical Engineering and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Performs site investigations & feasibility studies & provides technical consultation & budget estimates in response to requests for alteration, new construction, & energy management of electrical power & lighting systems.
  • Performs load & lighting calculations & applies technical design skills, including drafting, to create working drawings & specifications for power & lighting systems.
  • Performs engineering service in the implementation of energy conservation measures and conducts energy audits of building systems.
  • Reviews engineering studies & design proposals of consulting engineers to ensure compliance with University standards.
  • Coordinates activities required to ensure the smooth flow of electrical power & lighting systems projects during the design phase.
  • Serves as a spokesman, interpreter, and dispatcher of information among consultants, contractors, and the University community.
  • Reviews system designs, specifications, and material submittals of consultants and contractors for compliance with University standards.
  • Provides technical assistance to trades personnel and the University for troubleshooting work, minor renovation projects, and preventative maintenance program development.
  • Reviews design and provides technical guidance for electrical portion of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and repair and Maintenance (R&M) projects.
  • Performs periodic on-site inspection of electrical and related work to ensure conformance to the design and proper workmanship.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in Electrical Engineering.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in Electrical Engineering.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories associated with Electrical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex problems using creative reasoning and logic.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information clearly and accurately in writing and verbally.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • Ability to define project scopes, prepare comprehensive engineering reports, and design technically sound systems.
  • Ability to draft or utilize a computer-aided drafting system effectively.
  • Understanding of commercial & industrial construction methods, techniques, practices & management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2 years in power & lighting design.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software application to electrical power and lighting design and data tabulation.
  • 1 year in plan review or project management or 2 years in commercial and industrial electrical construction.
