About the position

The Principal Engineer for Data Platform and Services at Starbucks will lead the development and innovation of the company's data capabilities. This role focuses on streamlining and enhancing the data platform and services across various channels, ensuring real-time data access and accuracy. The engineer will collaborate with solution architects and engineering managers to tackle complex technical challenges and drive data initiatives, ultimately paving the way for future innovations at Starbucks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a centralized enterprise data management team to ensure real-time data access and accuracy.
  • Champion seamless API integration across various digital ecosystems.
  • Communicate complex ideas to non-technical peers and customers.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with business and technology partners.
  • Support the development team in resolving developer issues promptly.
  • Engineer build and release processes for data platforms.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on standards and services.
  • Ensure architectural solutions are stable, secure, and compliant with company standards.
  • Implement technologies in accordance with information security principles.
  • Provide high-availability operational support and automate solutions.
  • Implement telemetry capabilities for performance metrics.
  • Ensure continuous availability and operational continuity of critical systems.

Requirements

  • 10-15 years of professional industry experience with software development and platform management.
  • 5 years of leading teams of six or more software developers.
  • 3 years of demonstrating technical leadership across multiple platforms.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 9+ years in Java/Spring Boot, CQRS, event streaming, Kafka, Spark with strong experience in Kubernetes or similar frameworks.
  • 7+ years of experience implementing scalable, resilient microservices on large-scale distributed platforms.
  • 5 years of managing systems of all sizes, including large distributed systems.
  • Knowledge in databases, including relational (Oracle) and NoSQL (Mongo, Cassandra, Couchbase).
  • Deep experience with enterprise security protocols and building RESTful services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cloud deployments (AWS and Azure preferred).
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
