About the position

The Engineer Principal Payload CONOPS Systems Engineer at BAE Systems is responsible for managing Payload CONOPS and Operations requirements throughout the program lifecycle. This role involves guiding subsystem development, gathering stakeholder input, identifying system interfaces, and ensuring effective communication with internal and external customers. The engineer will also mentor less experienced engineers and support integration and test activities, all while maintaining a collaborative and innovative work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Payload CONOPS and Operations requirements over the program lifecycle.
  • Guide subsystem development with a focus on mission CONOPS, subsystem interfaces, and timelines.
  • Gather needs and input from stakeholders, translating them into system constraints and operating procedures.
  • Identify system/subsystem interfaces and ensure proper documentation and flow of information.
  • Identify risks and collaborate with Systems Engineering to manage opportunities and threats.
  • Track and assess project changes impacting operational plans and products.
  • Communicate operational procedures to internal/external customers.
  • Encourage flight-like testing and provide input to risk assessments for exceptions.
  • Deliver presentations to customers in both informal and formal settings.
  • Support integration and test activities.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers in best systems engineering practices.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department and company.

Requirements

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 6 or more years related experience.
  • Self-starter attitude with a drive to deliver results beyond typical job responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain a strong technical vision of the end product.
  • Good communication skills to understand customer needs and describe proposed solutions clearly.
  • Good writing and presentation skills for communicating with senior decision-makers and technical audiences.
  • Desire to learn and foster intellectual curiosity in a collaborative environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity and experience in space instrumentation and payload engineering.
  • Experience with operational software (flight or ground).
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Ruby or Python.
