About the position

We are currently seeking a Process Safety Engineer who will play a crucial role in providing leadership and support for our refinery's Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management (RMP) programs. This position is integral to ensuring compliance and continuous improvement of PSM elements, including Management of Change (MOC), Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and Facility Siting and Auditing. The Process Safety Engineer will interact frequently with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering personnel to address process safety issues and foster a robust safety culture. This role involves analyzing and tracking process safety incidents, developing reports to communicate metrics and trends, and assisting in the monitoring of PSM elements. The engineer will lead incident investigations, critically review root causes, and challenge the organization to learn from incidents to prevent recurrence. Additionally, the engineer will conduct regulatory and technical research, participate in industry conferences, and advocate for sound regulations and updates to industry standards. Training is a key component of this role, as the Process Safety Engineer will develop and deliver training on various process safety management topics. The position requires a proactive approach to collaborating with facility personnel to ensure timely closure of process safety recommendations and to recommend solutions for potential problem areas. This role is essential in driving a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as program owner and/or technical SME for facility siting
  • Drive Open Process Safety issues to resolution interfacing with all levels of the organization
  • Analyze, track and trend process safety incidents
  • Track and analyze process safety metrics to identify trends, strengths, and improvement opportunities
  • Develop reports to effectively communicate metrics and trends
  • Assist in monitoring the effectiveness of Management of Change (MOC), Pre-startup Safety Review (PSSR), and Process Safety Information (PSI)
  • Lead/participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses and reporting
  • Critically review investigation root causes and recommendations
  • Participate in Refinery PSM Network
  • Regularly communicate with Process Safety Supervisor to meet goals and objectives
  • Conduct regulatory and technical research, and attend industry conferences
  • Participate in specialty industry groups to share and learn good process safety practices
  • Develop and deliver training on process safety management topics
  • Provide support for PSM regulatory inspections, including field inspections and document requests
  • Collaborate with facility personnel to ensure process safety recommendations are closed adequately in a timely manner
  • Recommend solutions for problems or potential problem areas with a focus on process safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Science Field required
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering preferred
  • 3 years engineering experience in refining, petrochemical or chemical industries with emphasis in process safety required
  • 7+ years engineering experience in refining preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to process safety
  • Knowledge and experience in facility siting specific to API 752/753/756
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA PSM standards and EPA RMP regulations
  • Strong knowledge of refinery and/or chemical operations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively present technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to perform essential job duties and work extended hours, including nights and weekends in process operations environment as needed
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in statistical application
  • Demonstrated skill in the interpretation and implementation of regulations/regulatory requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to provide training to multiple groups on a variety of applicable assigned discipline topics
  • Proficiency with various computer applications used for presentation, training, tracking and budget processes
  • Ability to recognize hazards, drive continual improvement and promote practical alternatives for risk reduction and risk control measures.
