About the position

The Protection and Controls (P&C) Engineer role is a hybrid position responsible for ensuring compliance, standardization, and support for protective relays and associated systems within the transmission and distribution system. The engineer will engage in compliance activities related to NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE, develop and implement standards and procedures, and provide technical support for system operations. This position can be filled at the Associate, Engineer, or Senior Engineer level, depending on the candidate's experience.

Responsibilities

  • Complete periodic compliance activities in accordance with NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE requirements.
  • Support the development of standards and procedures for compliance of the transmission and distribution protection systems.
  • Modify and maintain Short Circuit models and provide periodic updates as required.
  • Support short circuit coordination studies using fault simulation software.
  • Analyze disturbance events and develop corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support and direction to operating areas during normal and emergency situations.
  • Develop and update control center operating procedures.
  • Communicate infrastructure strategy and technical basis for asset renewal decisions to Asset Management.
  • Collaborate with the System Planning group for design guidance and protection system performance details.
  • Support design review and guidance for new transmission and distribution interconnection requests.
  • Actively support storm and emergency restoration assignments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor or Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus in electric power systems engineering.
  • Associate level: 0-3 years of experience; Engineer level: 3 years; Senior level: 5 years.
  • Experience with overcurrent and distance coordination studies using ASPEN Oneliner or equivalent software.
  • Experience performing post-event analysis using relay and digital fault recorder event records.
  • Thorough knowledge of transmission and distribution protective relaying principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
