About the position

The Kinder Morgan Process Safety (PSM) Engineer will provide technical and process safety expertise and leadership across the organization. This role focuses on developing and implementing standards and procedures to reduce risk and prevent process safety events, primarily in an office setting with travel to various site locations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Process Safety Management (PSM) and risk management initiatives to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Serve as a content lead/subject matter specialist for process safety elements and applicable regulations.
  • Advise and assist covered process locations in establishing and maintaining processes to improve process safety performance and compliance with OSHA's PSM and EPA's Risk Management Plan (RMP) regulations.
  • Facilitate, organize, and lead PHAs and related technical safety studies to ensure Process Safety performance meets Kinder Morgan Standards.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and accuracy of Risk Management Plans for areas of responsibility.
  • Provide technical and process safety expertise for Management of Change (MOC).
  • Drive effectiveness of established Management of Change and Pre-Start-up Review processes and conduct periodic audits to assess performance.
  • Develop and deliver process safety training to the Kinder Morgan workforce.
  • Act as the technical and process safety subject matter expert for the organization.
  • Participate in incident investigations, sharing lessons learned and determining process safety consequence status.
  • Conduct safety and integrity analysis, qualitative risk analysis, and facility siting surveys.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other engineering discipline OR Chemistry, Biology, or other life science discipline.
  • 3 years minimum required; 5 years of Professional experience in Process Safety Management preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant industry codes (e.g., OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA 40 CFR Part 68) and industry standards (RAGAGEP including NFPA, API, ASME, etc.).
  • Experience in technical hazard analysis and risk assessment methodologies, including awareness and interpretation of quantitative risk assessments.
  • Strong understanding of relevant safety standards and regulations, including PHA, HAZOP, LOPA.
  • Knowledge in safety studies including high consequence analyses (HCA), Facility Siting API RP 752, 753.
  • Expertise with PSM good practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of PHMSA and requirements to be compliant.
  • Ability to work autonomously, show initiative, and have flexibility to travel and work outside normal office hours.
  • Excellent analytical/problem solving, organizational, and planning skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Solid understanding of process safety elements and practical knowledge of leading hazard assessments.
  • Operational experience and knowledge of natural gas processing facilities, terminals, or refineries and related equipment.
  • Experience facilitating Process Hazard Analyses, Layers of Protection Analyses, or similar risk reviews.
