As part of Corporate Engineering, the Global Robotics Program (GRP) is responsible for the design and oversight of robotic applications across all Lilly manufacturing sites around the globe. This includes testing new technologies, delivering proof of concepts, designing robotic systems, establishing robotics engineering best practices and/or standards, and deploying site robotic systems in partnership with site resources. The role involves working closely with the Robotics Platform Owner to support the design of robotic and material movement systems, leading efforts with global sites to develop solutions for the integration of robotic systems, and providing technical mentoring to Lilly engineers related to the deployment and utilization of robotic technologies. The position requires a strong focus on safety, compliance, and quality best practices when delivering robotic systems to manufacturing sites. The engineer will also support GRP lab activities and application development in areas including robotic system design, vision development, robot code development, and augmented/virtual reality simulation. This role is critical in ensuring that Lilly's robotic systems are effectively designed, deployed, and maintained across various manufacturing environments, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our operations.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Robotics Platform Owner to support the design of robotic and material movement systems.
  • Lead efforts with global sites and Robotics program peers to develop solutions for the integration of robotic systems that enable the flow of material and data across our manufacturing sites.
  • Work with vendors to troubleshoot, shakedown, and oversee Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) activities.
  • Develop capabilities in robotics and PLC programming to effectively troubleshoot design and/or functional issues.
  • Reviewer of site documentation for assigned engineering systems deployed to sites.
  • Support the effective design and deployments of robotic technologies by working in multi-disciplinary teams within manufacturing, quality, and other business units.
  • Be a champion for safety, compliance, and quality best practices when delivering robotic systems to manufacturing sites.
  • Support GRP lab activities and application development in areas including robotic system design, 2D and 3D vision development, robot code development, End of Arm Tooling (EoAT) design, augmented / virtual reality simulation, rapid prototyping, and augmented / virtual reality simulation.
  • Provide technical mentoring to Lilly engineers related to the deployment and utilization of robotic technologies, including serving as a Peer Coach to new robotics engineers in the department.
  • Lead or support the design, development, and deployment of solutions for material movement at Lilly manufacturing sites.
  • Provide oversight of supplier, contract, and site resources in the delivery of robotics systems to Lilly sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's in a science or engineering.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in the development and deployment of robotic and/or automated material movement systems.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience as an engineer in a highly automated environment.
  • Ability to travel (50%) domestically and/or internationally up to 1-2 weeks per month.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Project).
  • Knowledge in control system programming and warehouse integration with PLC, HMI, and MES systems such as Rockwell Automation Studio5000, FactoryTalk SE.
  • Knowledge in Fanuc programming, 3DV, Cognex Vision Systems, Visual Components.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing, parenteral, and/or packaging processes.
  • Experience in Commissioning & Qualification, asset delivery, validation activities, and cGMP regulations.
  • Experience in automated storage and retrieval systems including warehouse controls and automated guided vehicles/autonomous mobile robots.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to customers, business partners, and staff including good oral, written, and visual presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize and implement various tools, systems, and processes resulting in improved operational excellence.
  • Proficiency in working cross-functionally to deliver on highly complex tasks that may have aggressive timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within and lead diverse, cross-functional teams (engineering, manufacturing, operations, tech scientists, quality, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply solutions to different situations by understanding customer needs and/or applying strong problem solving skills.
  • Thorough knowledge/experience of applicable cGMP regulations as well as robotics industry standards.
