About the position

The Senior Engineering Applications Engineer is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing activities related to assigned programs and projects within the organization. This position involves planning, developing, testing, and supervising the development of engineering applications that support both internal and external clients. A key focus of this role is to contribute to the improvement and innovation of ABS engineering applications as part of the Digital Class framework. The engineer will act as a product owner, engaging in research, design, development, verification, and supervision of various functional modules aimed at enhancing the end-user experience concerning ABS rules, requirements, calculations, and analyses, leveraging automation and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. In collaboration with the development team and stakeholders, the engineer will be responsible for developing prototypes and conducting proof-of-concept studies to refine program designs. Given the complexity and difficulty of these activities, the role requires a comprehensive application of knowledge in engineering analysis, information technology, and digitalization, alongside the ability to devise creative, innovative, and forward-looking solutions. The engineer will engage with stakeholders to gather design requirements, develop roadmaps for modules and products, and identify opportunities for improvement in Engineering Applications. This role also entails maintaining strong relationships with customers and coworkers, providing expert advice on technology and engineering matters, and ensuring compliance with ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management System requirements.

Responsibilities

• Discuss with stakeholders to gather design requirements.
• Develop roadmaps for modules and products.
• Carry out proof of concept (POC) studies and develop prototypes to test the fitness of different solutions.
• Identify opportunities and propose solutions to improve Engineering Applications.
• Serve as a leader or member of Engineering Applications development or support team.
• Carry out assigned duties on schedule and within budget.
• Coordinate and collaborate with Engineering, Technology, IT, and other departments for Engineering Applications planning, design, development, testing, and maintenance.
• Maintain good relations with customers and coworkers and support Engineering Application users.
• Develop suggested Engineering Applications development projects as assigned.
• Provide expert advice in matters related to technology, engineering, Rules, and Regulations.
• Collect user feedback and client needs, track industrial trends and technology development, and propose new features, technologies, and solutions for continuous improvement of Engineering Applications.
• Ensure compliance with ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management System requirements concerning technical work.

Requirements

• Completion of an engineering or computer science curriculum from a University (B.S. or equivalent) or Professional or chartered engineer license.
• 5 years of relevant engineering and/or software development experience in a shipyard, marine or offshore design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, CAD or engineering software company, software development or consulting company, university, or a classification society.
• Command of the English language.
• Knowledge of engineering analysis, specifically in structural analysis, finite element approach, and structural or machinery Rule-compliance assessment.
• Knowledge of applicable Class Rules and regulations for marine and offshore structures or machinery and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
• Understanding of software development and IT technologies.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced product development environment, where fast learning and exploration of new technologies is needed.
• Ability to use effective communication methods to hold effective discussions with both technical teams and business teams.
• Understanding of data science and natural language processing is preferred.
• The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive relationships with clients and peers.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
• Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
• Interest in data, digital, system, software, and its analytics and development.
• Knowledge and experience in coding is preferred.
• Ability to develop a working knowledge of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related instructions, as well as the ABS Employee Safety Policy.

• Engineering software development experience is preferred.
