About the position

The Senior Engineer-Special Studies plays a crucial role in the transformation of the electric power system by conducting detailed technical modeling and analysis. This position requires extensive experience in modeling and planning the bulk electric power system, focusing on long-range load forecasting and infrastructure improvements. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders and adherence to industry standards to ensure reliable future growth of the electric system.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, conduct and present scenario and probabilistic based planning studies under various system conditions.
  • Contribute sound engineering input to develop robust, reliable, low-cost solutions.
  • Conduct critical review of data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
  • Interface with ISO-New England and other departments to understand and mitigate electric system needs.
  • Coordinate and oversee studies performed by vendors and consultants, analyzing assumptions and conclusions.
  • Prepare engineering output and summarize findings in reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups to develop long-range planning standards for new technologies.
  • Actively represent Eversource on regional, national, and international committees.
  • Conduct operation studies to validate and suggest operation procedures as needed.
  • Mentor and provide technical training to Junior/Associate engineers.
  • Perform emergent storm assignments during adverse conditions.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
  • Experience with power system modeling and simulation software for steady state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transients.
  • Technical understanding of HVDC and inverter-based resource parameters and modeling.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in PSSE, PSCAD, Microsoft Office 365, and programming experience in Python or VBA.
  • Experience applying NERC TPL, NPCC, and ISO-NE planning procedures.
  • BSEE required, with advanced degrees or certifications preferred.
  • Minimum of five years specialized experience in transmission planning and software simulations.

  • Advanced Degrees or Certifications (e.g. MSEE, Ph.D., PE)
  • Experience with simulation software such as Powertech (TSAT, VSAT), ASPEN Oneliner, EMTP (ATP), TARA, PI Processbook.
