The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). This role is designed for individuals who are looking to start their careers in civil engineering, specifically in the Poughkeepsie, NY area. As an Engineer Trainee, you will undergo a 24-month traineeship that will prepare you for advancement to the Assistant Engineer position, Grade 20. To qualify for this role, candidates must either possess a bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology or have passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) along with one year of full-time engineering experience. The position offers a structured pathway for career advancement, with the possibility of early promotion to Assistant Engineer if certain criteria are met during the traineeship. In this role, you will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer and will be involved in various engineering tasks depending on your assignment. When assigned to construction projects, you will function as an Engineer-In-Charge, overseeing the work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with contract specifications and engineering standards. You will also be responsible for reviewing plans and estimates from consultants and contractors, initiating design changes, completing daily work reports, and preparing final documents and record plans. This position requires a strong understanding of engineering principles and the ability to manage technically complex projects that may involve community engagement and accelerated scheduling. The NY HELPS program allows for non-competitive appointments, meaning that candidates who meet the minimum qualifications can be hired without the need for an examination. This program is expected to transition employees to competitive status in the future, granting them the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees of New York State. Additionally, while serving in this title, employees will have the opportunity to participate in promotion examinations for which they qualify, further enhancing their career development opportunities.
