The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer position at the New York State Department of Transportation is designed for individuals seeking to develop their engineering skills in civil and transportation projects. This role involves a 24-month traineeship leading to an Assistant Engineer position, where the incumbent will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Responsibilities include designing capital highway and bridge projects, conducting field inspections, and ensuring project compliance with departmental standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design capital highway and bridge projects including preparation of estimates and project plans.
  • Conduct field work in bridge inspection and engineer estimates.
  • Perform Quality Control review of project documents prepared by others for consistency with department standards.
  • Prepare project reports and ROW maps.
  • Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience.
  • For Assistant Engineer: proof of passing the NCEES FE AND a qualifying bachelor's degree or one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, or traffic management systems.
