The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer position at the New York State Department of Transportation is designed for individuals seeking to develop their engineering skills in civil and transportation engineering. This role involves a traineeship leading to an Assistant Engineer position, where the incumbent will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer, engaging in various engineering tasks related to highway and bridge projects. The position emphasizes both design and fieldwork, contributing to the department's response to emergency situations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Design capital highway and bridge projects including preparation of estimates and project plans.
  • Conduct 3D CADD design for project plans.
  • Prepare project reports and ROW maps.
  • Perform field work in bridge inspection and engineer estimates.
  • Review project documents for consistency with department standards and constructability.
  • Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support emergency response.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) with one year of full-time engineering experience.
  • For Assistant Engineer: proof of passing the NCEES FE and a qualifying bachelor's degree or one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with transportation projects related to highways, railroads, bridges, or traffic management systems.
