About the position

The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer position within the Department of Transportation in Long Island City, NY, is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). This role is designed for individuals who are looking to start their careers in civil engineering, specifically in the transportation sector. The position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in engineering assignments related to the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, buildings, and other critical infrastructure. As an Engineer Trainee, you will undergo a 24-month traineeship that will prepare you for advancement to the Assistant Engineer role, provided you meet the necessary qualifications, including passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE). During your traineeship, you will work under the guidance of higher-level supervisors and managers, performing a variety of engineering tasks. These tasks will include providing technical expertise to the department's design and maintenance programs, conducting laboratory and field tests, analyzing data, preparing reports, and conducting field inspections during construction projects. The role may also require occasional travel statewide, including overnight stays, to collect and analyze field data. You will be expected to adapt to various working conditions, including the possibility of overnight shifts and serving within the Incident Command System to support emergency responses. This position not only offers a competitive salary but also the potential for salary increases upon obtaining your FE certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering assignments related to the construction of highways, bridges, buildings, and other facilities.
  • Provide technical expertise to the Department's design and maintenance programs.
  • Conduct laboratory and field tests using instrumentation and/or data acquisition equipment.
  • Evaluate and analyze resulting data from tests and inspections.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations based on findings.
  • Conduct field inspections during construction projects.
  • Occasionally travel statewide with overnight stays to collect and analyze field data.
  • Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience.
  • One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data analysis and report preparation.
  • Familiarity with construction project management.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $65,001 - $91,381 per year.
  • Additional $3,400 location pay.
