About the position

The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer position at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) is a full-time, permanent role that falls under the jurisdiction of the competitive class. This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), which allows for non-competitive appointments for qualified candidates. The role primarily involves performing engineering assignments related to the construction of highways, bridges, buildings, and other facilities. Additionally, the position requires preparing reports and recommendations, conducting field inspections during construction, and may involve overnight travel statewide to collect and analyze field data. The Engineer Trainee will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to the Assistant Engineer position, with the possibility of early advancement based on performance and qualifications. Candidates must meet specific educational and experience requirements, including a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) along with one year of full-time engineering experience in transportation projects. The role may also require participation in the Incident Command System to support the department's response to emergencies.
