About the position

The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer position at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is designed for individuals seeking to develop their engineering skills in civil and transportation engineering. This role involves a 24-month traineeship leading to an Assistant Engineer position, where incumbents will work under the supervision of licensed professional engineers on various projects related to structures, design, technical services, construction, and traffic safety. Responsibilities

  • Prepare and/or check designs for bridges and other structural components.
  • Prepare and/or check layouts for entire bridge structures.
  • Assist in field inspection of project sites or existing bridges and structures.
  • Prepare 3D plans for highway and bridge projects using CADD.
  • Assist with the preparation of project reports, development of engineer's estimates, and project scheduling.
  • Provide technical expertise in design, construction, and maintenance programs.
  • Serve as Engineer-In-Charge of construction projects or assist engineers in supervising major construction projects.
  • Conduct physical inspections and tests of construction in progress and on completion.
  • Propose and implement Transportation Systems Management and Operations to advance performance goals.
  • Perform traffic engineering and safety studies, including field measurements and computer modeling.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time engineering experience.
  • For Assistant Engineer: proof of passing the NCEES FE and a qualifying bachelor's degree or one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with CADD software for design purposes.
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with construction project management.
