The Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation) position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). This role is designed for individuals who are looking to start their careers in civil engineering, specifically in transportation projects. The position requires candidates to meet specific qualifications, which include either holding a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field or having passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) along with one year of full-time engineering experience in transportation-related projects. As an Engineer Trainee, you will undergo a 24-month traineeship that will prepare you for advancement to the Assistant Engineer role. During this period, you will be expected to pass the FE exam and complete the traineeship requirements satisfactorily. Early advancement to the Assistant Engineer position may be possible if you meet the necessary criteria before the end of the traineeship. The Assistant Engineer role also requires proof of passing the FE exam and either a qualifying degree or relevant experience in engineering. In this position, you will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer, performing various engineering tasks related to the structural design of bridges. Your responsibilities will include developing and checking designs, preparing layouts, and creating bridge plans and specifications. You will also assist in field inspections, collect and evaluate data, and prepare technical reports. Coordination with stakeholders, including consultants and other agencies, will be a key part of your role. Additionally, you may be involved in emergency response efforts as part of the Incident Command System.
