About the position

The Engineer VI position at Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities involves managing capital improvement projects for the Stormwater and Wastewater Collections Teams. The role requires experienced professional engineers to oversee project planning, design, contractor selection, construction, and completion, while providing direction and mentorship to team members. The position plays a crucial role in enhancing the infrastructure essential for the growth and success of Salt Lake City.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and supervises the planning, design, construction and operation of major engineering projects or programs.
  • Assigns work of subordinate technical staff and resolves personnel problems.
  • Hires consultants and approves their assignments and pay requests.
  • Specifies project parameters and manages project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Develops funding sources from other agencies and initiates contract change orders for departmental approval.
  • Approves reports of work done and project status, and prepares complex project documents and engineering studies.
  • Represents Salt Lake City Corporation on various committees and maintains liaison with officials from City departments and other government agencies.
  • Directs day-to-day activities for support programs such as engineering records management and permit issuance.
  • Serves on design and project review committees, suggesting projects for development and developing engineering project policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Ten years of paid work experience performing civil engineering duties, including planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Six years of supervisory experience over subordinate personnel.
  • Possession of a professional engineer's license from the State of Utah or ability to obtain it within six months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license or driving privilege card.
  • Ability to use computers, prepare and present complex reports, and publish articles in recognized engineering publications.
  • Membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers or an equivalent professional organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Post-graduate engineering education may substitute for up to one year of required experience.
