About the position

The position involves conducting technical engineering and construction analyses of complex surety bond disputes and claims, as well as Subcontractor Default Insurance Claims. The role requires oversight and management of teams to resolve major claims, assist in underwriting objectives, and evaluate contractor controls and job cost systems. The position is integral to Liberty Mutual Surety, the world's largest global surety provider, and emphasizes building profitable relationships through effective business solutions and responsive service.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical and construction analyses of large and complex surety bond disputes and claims.
  • Prepare technical reports and evaluate loss exposures in major bond defaults.
  • Supervise and coordinate consultants' investigations and preparation of default reports.
  • Make recommendations regarding remedies for bond defaults and establish loss reserves.
  • Assist in drafting, negotiating, and settling contractual agreements related to surety obligations.
  • Manage project completions by consultants and completion contractors.
  • Advise trial counsel on engineering and construction management issues.
  • Participate in pre-trial preparation, mediation, and arbitration as needed.
  • Act as an expert witness in technical matters related to construction contracts and claims.
  • Monitor workflows and quality of work in claims handling and ensure adherence to company policies.

Requirements

  • BA/BS Degree in engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years progressively responsible surety claims or construction management experience.
  • At least 3 years of construction management experience required.
  • 5-7 years of proven surety claims management experience preferred.
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge claim files.
  • Demonstrated ability to convey complex analyses into understandable formats for claims handling or training purposes.
  • Significant exposure to legal processes required.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with corporate internal audit programs.
  • Familiarity with financial statements and corporate audits.
