About the position

Cook Inlet Tug & Barge has been dedicated to providing marine services without equal since 1924. Specializing in harbor services and fuel distribution throughout South Central, Southeast and Western Alaska, we're not looking to hire just anyone. We seek skilled and experienced mariners who crave adventure and take pride in their ability to get things done in a challenging environment. As a Vessel Engineer, you maintain the heart of the vessel. You'll ensure all vessel machinery, equipment and systems are run, maintained and repaired in a safe and effective way. It's a seasonal position - four to six months. As leaders in our industry, we take crew comfort seriously, and you can always expect to work on and with top-notch equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all machinery and systems, including main propulsion, auxiliary power generation, ancillary, deck and cargo handling.
  • Ensure proper operations of control, monitoring, and alarm components and systems.
  • Maintain a safe work environment on the vessel, implementing company policies and procedures, and general maritime industry standards.
  • Perform safe and effective repairs with limited resources and outside support while under tight time constraints.
  • Notify the Captain and Port Engineer of any abnormal changes in the status of machinery operation.
  • Troubleshoot machinery malfunctions and effectively communicate with the Captain, Port Engineer, and designated shoreside support staff and vendors.
  • Manage planned and emergency maintenance and repairs as assigned by the Port Engineer.
  • Check and maintain fuel/fluid levels in all tanks within the vessel.
  • Take monthly oil samples for analysis and be responsible for vessel bunkering operations.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels of critical spares and general vessel parts.
  • Lead and train junior engineering staff in company policies, vessel operations, equipment repair, and preventative maintenance procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a QMED (Engineer License preferred).
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Document, or Merchant Mariner Credential, STCW, PIC, HAZWOPER.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Legal approval to work in the United States.
  • Minimum of five years of previous experience during the last 15 years as a Marine Engineer, with at least three years as a Chief Engineer.

Nice-to-haves

  • Physically fit enough to climb aboard tugs and barges, ascend and descend ladders, and balance while aboard vessels in a seaway.
  • Comfortable with heights or narrow walkways.
  • Skilled in selecting appropriate equipment for the job.
  • Ability to work weekends, nights, and holidays, and not bothered by extreme weather conditions.
