About the position

The Engineering Assistant I-II position at TxDOT is designed for recent graduates in engineering, providing them with hands-on experience and training in various engineering disciplines. The role focuses on developing skills necessary for engineering licensing and involves working under the supervision of licensed professional engineers. The position includes responsibilities in design, construction, inspection, and project management, aimed at preparing candidates for future engineering roles.

Responsibilities

  • Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related activities.
  • Assists with contract administration for construction and maintenance projects to ensure contractor compliance.
  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program, including job rotation and continuing education.
  • Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
  • Performs design computations and plan preparations for construction projects.
  • Conducts engineering calculations for plan quantities as part of PS&E preparation activities.
  • Engages in engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation, and analysis activities.
  • Performs advanced and specialized engineering design work (for Engineering Assistant II).
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.
  • Valid driver's license required for driving a state vehicle.
  • Texas Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT).
  • Engineering Assistant I: No prior experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant II: 1 year of engineering-related experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in engineering may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Doctoral degree in engineering may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
