About the position

The Engineering Compliance and Standards Intern at South Jersey Industries (SJI) is a summer internship role designed for students pursuing a degree in engineering or a related field. This position offers a unique opportunity to work with the Compliance and Standards, Quality Assurance, and Emergency Preparedness engineering teams. Interns will engage in various projects, gain hands-on experience, and participate in networking events, mentorship, and educational seminars throughout the 11-week program. The role emphasizes flexibility with a hybrid work environment and aims to develop the intern's skills in compliance, standards, and quality assurance within the energy sector.

Responsibilities

  • Support Emergency Preparedness, Compliance, Standards, and Quality Assurance departments on various projects and tasks.
  • Assist the Standards Department in ensuring that Company Standards are current with Federal, State, and local requirements as well as industry best practices.
  • Review current Standards and recommend changes.
  • Perform basic drafting of Standard Details.
  • Assist in the review of new materials and tools proposed for the company.
  • Help the Compliance Department in preparing reports and analysis regarding transmission and distribution compliance and quality assurance activities.
  • Participate in business and functional meetings to understand reporting/data requirements.
  • Assist the Emergency Preparedness Department in planning and reviewing drills and exercises related to Gas Utility practices.
  • Review Emergency Preparedness documents for conformance with Federal and State codes and industry best practices.
  • Assist in performing field audits and inspections to ensure compliance with organization manuals and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in group meetings related to Quality Assurance and present results of work.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience
  • Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree, with a graduation date of Fall 2023 or later
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong time-management skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work in a multi-tasked environment

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to read and interpret codes (Federal, State, Industry, Company, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret simple engineering documents and drawings
  • Basic drafting experience (AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, etc.)
  • Technical writing skill and/or experience
  • Ability to perform basic or introductory engineering calculations
