About the position

The Engineering Inspector is responsible for inspecting the construction of public infrastructure and facilities to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. This role involves quality assurance inspections on civil engineering and public works projects, ensuring that they meet city, industry, and governmental quality standards. The inspector will also assist with technical duties related to planning, designing, and coordinating various city projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manages, coordinates, and oversees City public works projects including streets, curb, gutter, sidewalks, water lines, sanitary sewer lines, storm drain systems, parks, and other capital improvements.
  • Conducts research on property boundaries, rights-of-way, easements, and existing improvements.
  • Conducts studies to support project design and researches and obtains funding sources.
  • Reads and interprets drawings and determines plan conformity to established standards.
  • Verifies and maintains files and up-to-date records (as-built drawings, maps, etc.).
  • Updates and uses GIS and other asset management programs for decision-making purposes.
  • Coordinates design projects with consulting engineers and other design professionals.
  • Inspects construction of public works projects by reading, interpreting plans, and inspecting installations.
  • Compiles, maintains, and provides utility location information with the help of the City GIS Technician.
  • Tests materials for compliance to standards and project specifications.
  • Approves continuance of work progress or issues 'stop work' notices based upon compliance.
  • Notifies contractors of unacceptable construction materials.
  • Maintains records and notes of field inspection findings.
  • Monitors testing equipment and ensures proper working condition and accuracy.
  • Issues permits for street excavation and other construction activities.
  • Assists in the preparation of engineering plans and specifications, bidding process, and selection criteria for public contracts.
  • Provides technical assistance and information to the public and other entities, responding to inquiries from various stakeholders.
  • Attends meetings and represents the city's interests with governmental organizations.
  • Assists with preparation of presentations to City Council concerning public works projects.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field; or graduation from high school or GED equivalent plus four years of experience in the construction inspection field; or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license or can obtain one prior to employment.
  • Must obtain NICET I Certification for Stormwater and Wastewater System Inspection, Water and Sewer Lines, Asphalt, Concrete and Soils; ACI Level 1 Certification for Concrete Field Testing Technician; ACI Level 1 Certification for Concrete Construction Inspector; APWA Public Works Inspector; Utah Water Operator Grade I; Registered Stormwater Inspector; Registered SWPPP Reviewer; and completion of an approved OSHA training class, Utah Sewer Certification (Grade 1), Nuclear Troxler Certified within one year of employment.
