About The Position

The Engineering Inspector I position within the City of Fort Lauderdale's Development Services Department is responsible for performing technical inspections of construction and private development projects. This role ensures compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable regulations, contributing to the integrity of public infrastructure and services. The inspector will work closely with contractors and city officials to verify work completion and maintain accurate records, while also addressing community concerns related to construction activities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent supplemented by technical coursework in construction, engineering, estimating, or a related field.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in road, water, wastewater, or public infrastructure construction, or a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with registration as an Engineering Intern (EI).
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • Depending on area of assignment, must possess or be able to obtain Maintenance of Traffic Certification (MOT) and Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) - Stormwater Management Inspector Certification within six months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • FDOT Construction Training Qualification Program (CQTP) - Asphalt Level I and II certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections of construction projects in the City right-of-way to ensure compliance with approved permits and plans.
  • Review approved construction schedules and verify completed work of contractors.
  • Organize data collected from the field and prepare technical reports of findings.
  • Review drawings for errors, omissions, and constructability.
  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications; review various construction-related documents.
  • Determine quantities of materials used and verify the amount of work completed for pay request applications.
  • Investigate complaints related to road damage, stormwater issues, and utility construction.
  • Prepare and complete correspondence, documents, forms, and reports to meet local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
  • Electronically prepare reports and maintain inspection records using provided hardware and software systems.
