About the position

The Engineering Inspector is responsible for performing inspection work of city personnel and private contractors in connection with a variety of engineering construction projects. These projects include construction, repaving, resurfacing and repairing of city streets, sidewalks and curbs making certain that the work being performed and the materials used are in accordance with plans and specifications. The incumbent exercises independent judgment as to tasks and methods used in the performance of this inspection work. Immediate supervision is received from an Associate Engineer. Supervision is exercised over personnel assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects a variety of engineering construction, i.e., paving, resurfacing and repairing of streets, sidewalk repair, sidewalk vaults, buildings, permits and plans for curb cuts, etc.
  • Visually inspects projects to determine compliance with specifications and accepted pavement and concrete construction methods and standards.
  • Takes and records measurements.
  • Performs a variety of tests on materials being used for said project, i.e. gradation tests, slump tests, moisture content tests and load and strength tests.
  • Inspects and tests materials used for projects.
  • Maintains records of the test results and inspections of said work.
  • Maintains complete record of time, cost of materials and materials used for all projects.
  • Approves completed work for payment.
  • Prepares and submits reports as requested.
  • Performs construction surveying to establish lines and grades for street construction projects.
  • Collects and records data and information.
  • Conducts tests on site, using simple testing and measurement equipment.
  • Performs simple engineering calculations to verify data collected on complete measurements and tests.
  • Prepares rough basic engineering sketches and computations to be used in the paving, resurfacing and repairing of streets.
  • Supervises city personnel in the paving, resurfacing and repairing of streets.
  • Takes measurements, collects and records data and information.
  • Performs simple engineering calculations to verify data collected.
  • Maintains records and reports of inspections, time and materials used.
  • Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Continuous and permanent status in any city department as an Assistant Superintendent of Street Repair or Junior Engineer for one year; OR, Senior Drafting Technician or Street Repair Supervisor I for two years; OR, Drafting Technician, Engineering Aide or Senior Engineering Aide for three years.
  • Three years of full time experience in either highway design, highway construction or inspection work involving highway design/construction.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering or a closely related field; OR, Associate's Degree from an accredited college, university or technical institute in Civil Technology or a closely related field and two years of full time experience in either highway design, highway construction or inspection work involving highway design/construction; OR, Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma including 15 credit hours in Civil Technology or a closely related field from an accredited college, university or technical institute and five years of full time experience in either highway design, highway construction or inspection work involving highway design/construction; OR, An equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A through C.
