About the position

The Engineering Manager for AppArmor at Canonical plays a crucial role in enhancing the security of the Ubuntu operating system, which is vital for millions of users globally. This position involves leading a team of engineers to develop security features for AppArmor, a security module that provides mandatory access control. The manager will be responsible for fostering talent, driving collaboration across teams, and ensuring the implementation of effective engineering processes to address emerging security threats.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior levels.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback to team members.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators to ensure effective performance.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes to enhance productivity.
  • Represent the team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices.
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Collaborate with other leaders as part of the security engineering leadership team.

Requirements

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field, or a compelling alternative narrative.
  • Proven drive and a track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Passion for developing and growing people, with a history of doing so.
  • Organized and capable of ensuring timely, high-quality results from the team.
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with colleagues, partners, and the community.
  • Proficient in C programming and knowledgeable about Linux kernel development.
  • Experience with Linux Security Modules and a passion for software and application security.
  • Solid experience in an agile development environment.
