About the position

The Engineering Manager for Core Machine Learning at Google Cloud is responsible for leading a team of engineers in the development and optimization of machine learning systems and products. This role combines technical expertise with leadership skills to manage project goals, contribute to product strategy, and guide the technical direction of multiple teams across various locations. The manager will oversee large-scale projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and fostering a collaborative environment for innovation and growth.

Responsibilities

• Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals.
• Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
• Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals.
• Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
• Develop the mid-term technical vision and roadmap within the scope of your team.
• Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
• Design, guide and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
• Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience with software development in C++ programming language.
• 5 years of experience with machine learning algorithms and tools (e.g., TensorFlow), artificial intelligence, deep learning, or natural language processing.
• 5 years of experience with design and architecture; and testing/launching software products.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
• 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
• Experience with Machine Learning and High Performance Computing (HPC).
• Experience in compilers.
