About the position

The Engineering Manager for the Data Platform at Canonical will lead a team focused on building scalable data solutions for Kubernetes and cloud environments. This role involves hiring, mentoring, and coaching team members while also contributing to code development. The manager will advocate for modern software development practices and ensure the delivery of high-quality products that align with user needs and company values.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team building scalable data solutions for Kubernetes and cloud machines
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and provide feedback to team members
  • Contribute code directly when needed to demonstrate engineering skills
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams and stakeholders
  • Advocate for modern, agile software development practices
  • Develop and promote great engineering and organizational practices
  • Ensure the team delivers excellent products by maintaining a culture of quality
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
  • Collaborate with other leaders in the organization as part of the leadership team
  • Participate in global travel twice yearly for internal events

Requirements

  • Software engineering background, preferably with Python and Golang experience
  • Experience running production systems at scale, preferably with Big Data or MySQL
  • Excellent judgement about people and their developmental needs
  • Proven ability to build high-quality, open-source software
  • Experience driving good engineering practices around performance and quality
  • Open-minded attitude towards new technologies
  • Ambition to build products that improve software and infrastructure operations
  • Passion for developing and growing people

Nice-to-haves

  • Specialist knowledge in Spark, Superset, MySQL, or similar
  • Prior experience working with open source and community engagement
