About the position

The Engineering Manager, Data Science role at OpenAI involves leading the Sales and Customer Support Data Team within the Go-To-Market (GTM) organization. The position focuses on fostering a data-driven culture that enhances insight generation, decision-making, and strategic planning. The manager will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that data informs all decisions related to sales-led initiatives, ultimately driving business growth and improving customer engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of data scientists, fostering a collaborative, high-performance environment.
  • Embed with the Sales and Customer Support teams as a trusted partner, uncovering new ways to improve the business and drive growth.
  • Oversee and manage cross-functional data science projects focused on revenue, pricing, usage, customer engagement, and other topics central to the Go to Market organization.
  • Drive a data-driven culture by defining, tracking, and operationalizing critical metrics and establishing source-of-truth dashboards and performance reporting for GTM.
  • Develop deep expertise in OpenAI's data and systems, working closely with Data Engineering, Finance, and other business teams to access and integrate underlying data, generating actionable insights.
  • Lead the development and socialization of dashboards, reports, and other data tools, empowering GTM teams to answer data questions independently.
  • Collaborate with data science peers across the organization to share knowledge and continuously improve data practices.

Requirements

  • 12+ years in data science, with 5+ years managing data science or analytics teams within GTM functions like Sales or Customer Support.
  • Ability to translate complex business questions into actionable frameworks and analyses that drive decision-making.
  • Skilled at conveying complex ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, building alignment across teams.
  • Proven track record of addressing challenges in Sales, Support, Finance, or other GTM areas through data insights and strategic analysis.
  • Experience leading a team of senior individual contributors while also being hands-on and independently driving analyses when needed.
  • Expertise in statistics and causal inference, with experience in both experimentation and observational causal studies.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL, quantitative programming languages like Python or R, and business intelligence tools such as Mode, Tableau, or Looker.
  • Unwavering commitment to accuracy, ensuring the highest standards in data integrity and insight quality.
