About the position

The Engineering Manager, Database at MarketAxess is responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of database systems that support the company's data management needs. This role involves collaborating with technology and business stakeholders to ensure database performance, security, and scalability while supporting the migration of databases to the AWS cloud. The position requires strong leadership and technical skills to optimize database operations and address performance issues effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement database systems that are scalable, secure, and optimized for performance.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks and other issues.
  • Manage database security, access control, and backup and recovery processes.
  • Develop and implement database backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and minimize downtime.
  • Perform database capacity planning and resource utilization analysis for scalability and efficient resource allocation.
  • Create and implement monitoring and alerting solutions to detect and prevent issues before they impact customers.
  • Support the migration of databases from on-premises to AWS cloud.
  • Provide support for large scale database instances across production, non-production, and development environments.
  • Perform regular upgrades and patches to address security vulnerabilities.
  • Support and improve database availability and scalability.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation supporting the database infrastructure and respond to production incidents.
  • Proactively identify potential issues, risks, and areas for improvement in the database infrastructure and propose and implement solutions.
  • Provide perspective on leading industry trends, recommendations on new and emerging technologies, and engineering process improvements.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in Oracle RAC, Data Guard, and RMAN (12c, 18c, 19c).
  • 3+ years of experience in Golden Gate.
  • Experience with cloud services, databases, and datastores such as Amazon RDS, Spanner, CloudSQL, PostgreSQL, and/or MySQL.
  • Experience with cloud technologies specifically AWS.
  • Strong scripting experience in multiple languages such as Python, Golang, etc.
  • Proficiency in database administration, configuration, and performance tuning, with a focus on PostgreSQL.
  • Solid understanding of database design principles, data modeling, and normalization.
  • Experience with database backup and recovery strategies, including high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Experience with database architecture, design, replication, clustering, HA/DR.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Terraform, Puppet, GitHub, and RunDeck.
  • Experience with modern technologies and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker), service deployment, monitoring, and scaling.
  • Demonstrated experience making pragmatic technical choices.
  • Experience with Monitoring Tools like OEM cloud control.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with various stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated and quick to respond to business challenges.
  • Resilient, optimistic, and a change agent - doesn't accept the status quo.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
