About the position

The Engineering Manager for the Human Data Team at OpenAI is responsible for leading a team that creates custom data solutions to enhance and evaluate AI models and products. This role involves managing individual contributors and team leads, collaborating with product managers and researchers, and ensuring the delivery of safe and reliable technology to millions of users. The manager will oversee the architecture, design, and development of data collection and management platforms, while also focusing on improving user experience and scalability.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage individual contributors and team leads on the Human Data team.
  • Collaborate with product managers, researchers, and engineering teams to create new data and tooling.
  • Build and grow high-performing teams in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Architect, build, and design tooling and infrastructure for data collection and management.
  • Iterate to improve user and developer experience for internal and partner research teams.
  • Understand data needs across OpenAI and develop the technical roadmap.
  • Drive high-leverage projects and resolve technical and organizational blockers.
  • Ensure the data collection platform is secure, scalable, and highly available.

Requirements

  • Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. in computer science, AI, machine learning, or a related field.
  • Experience as a hands-on individual contributor while managing a high-performing team.
  • Ability to write code and contribute significantly to projects.
  • Experience in hiring, coaching, and inspiring senior engineers or team leads.
  • Strong problem ownership and delegation skills.
