About the position

As the Engineering Manager of the Embedded Platform and Sensors team, you will lead the development of the critical software infrastructure bridging embedded hardware systems and the high-level applications of Wayve's autonomous vehicle fleet. Your leadership will drive the stability, security, and utility of Wayve's platform support while ensuring seamless integration of hardware components, sensor systems, and software. This role demands a strong technical background in both the hardware and software of embedded systems, paired with the ability to negotiate and align technical roadmaps with diverse stakeholders. Success in this role will have a far-reaching impact, ensuring that Wayve’s operating systems, sensor integration, and hardware/software interfaces remain robust and future-proof, laying the foundation for cutting-edge autonomous vehicle performance.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a multidisciplinary team of experts in Linux builds, sensor drivers, networking, and camera systems.
  • Define and execute the team’s roadmap in collaboration with stakeholders from the Hardware organization and application-layer teams.
  • Set clear objectives, foster collaboration, and ensure timely delivery of projects.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of hardware-tailored operating systems to ensure compatibility and optimize performance.
  • Direct efforts to enable sensors, camera systems, and other hardware components for use by Wayve’s autonomous vehicle (AV) applications.
  • Ensure robust system-level security, including networking and disk encryption.
  • Drive the team’s efforts to deliver secure and reliable OTA updates for the fleet.
  • Manage relationships with hardware vendors and align team deliverables with business and technical requirements.
  • Act as the interface between the team and other organizations, negotiating priorities and deliverables.
  • Recruit, mentor, and grow your team, cultivating technical excellence.
  • Identify skill gaps and facilitate training to meet the evolving needs of the team.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years in a leadership role within software development, including 3 years managing teams working on embedded systems or hardware/software integration.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux- or QNX-based systems and embedded software development.
  • Proficiency in at least one relevant programming language, such as C++ or Rust.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver software solutions bridging hardware and high-level applications.
  • Proven ability to define, negotiate, and execute technical roadmaps.
  • Exceptional communication skills to effectively liaise with hardware teams, application developers, and other stakeholders.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with automotive sensors and technologies like cameras, LiDAR, or radar.
  • Experience with embedded GPUs, Yocto builds, SOC-specific libraries (e.g., CUDA on Orin), or similar technologies.
  • A Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
