About the position

The Engineering Manager for the Service Platform at Stripe will lead a team of engineers responsible for building and expanding the service frameworks that support critical payment systems and other products. This role involves driving the technical vision of Stripe's service infrastructure, ensuring high reliability and performance while fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of talented engineers, providing mentorship and support.
  • Understand user needs to prioritize engineering work and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Oversee the entire development lifecycle of projects from planning to delivery.
  • Collaborate with high-visibility teams and stakeholders to support key engineering initiatives.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership in architecture, design, and incident response processes.
  • Work with leaders across the company to drive the long-term vision of Stripe's services roadmap.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with the recruiting team to attract and hire top talent.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager.
  • Technical expertise to drive clarity with staff engineers on architecture and strategic decisions.
  • Experience managing teams that shipped and operated critical distributed system infrastructure.
  • Experience with API design, abstractions, frameworks, or client libraries.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and make hard decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Encourages a healthy and supportive work environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5+ years of management experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for various audiences.
  • Experience with common infrastructure platforms (databases, logging, event streams, etc.).
  • Experience leading partially remote teams.
  • Experience developing sustainable in-house frameworks in large engineering organizations.
  • Experience building serverless platforms.
  • Experience managing incident response processes and on-call rotations.
