About the position

The Engineering Manager, Software - Discovery position at Genuine Parts Company (GPC) is a pivotal role that focuses on leading the engineering efforts to architect and implement the next generation of commerce platforms. This position is designed for a technologist and engineer who is comfortable with both the strategic and hands-on aspects of technology execution. The successful candidate will be responsible for the technology strategy and execution for GPC's unified commerce platforms, ensuring that the engineering team delivers high-quality solutions that meet business needs. In this role, you will work closely with a talented team to modernize the personalization and recommendations domain, implementing a technology platform architecture that supports the build-out of new commerce-related capabilities. You will have overall engineering accountability for item and product aggregated services, simplifying the complexity of current recommendation platforms, and reducing technical debt and total cost of ownership. Collaboration with cross-functional teams and external vendors will be essential, requiring strong relationship-building skills and organizational savvy. As a leader, you will be responsible for recruiting, managing, and motivating a team of engineers and engineering managers, fostering an environment that encourages innovation and agile methodologies. Your ability to communicate technical information effectively to all levels of the organization will be critical in driving the success of the engineering initiatives. This position offers a flexible work policy, allowing for a hybrid remote schedule, with locations available in Duluth or Atlanta, GA.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the cross-functional GPC team to implement the strategy and roadmap for modernizing the personalization and recommendations domain.
  • Implement the technology platforms architecture and execute on the roadmap to support the build-out of new commerce-related capabilities needed for the unified commerce strategy.
  • Maintain overall engineering accountability for the item and product aggregated services.
  • Ensure delivery and support of the platform, simplifying the complexity of current recommendations platforms and reducing technical debt and total cost of ownership.
  • Collaborate with peer leaders to accelerate and embed agile methodologies across the organization to enhance customer-backed problem solving and increase the pace of solution delivery.
  • Recruit, manage, and motivate a team of engineers and engineering managers to develop best-in-class solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering fields, or equivalent experience.
  • 8 years' (10+ preferred) experience in software engineering delivery, including 2+ years in a leadership role.
  • Consistent track record of leadership, teamwork, and delivering high-impact results.
  • Extensive experience building enterprise-grade systems/applications supporting business priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information and solutions to all levels of the business.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects, identifying primary and secondary objectives, prioritizing time, and communicating timelines to team members.
  • Desire to take product/project ownership and work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
  • Experience partnering with Analysts and Data Scientists on delivering reliable data for machine learning models for personalized recommendations.
  • Broad and deep technical understanding of relevant technologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in search engines like Apache Solr or Elastic Search or Vector Search.
  • Experience in Retail Knowledge Graph.
  • Data engineering for large-scale machine learning on Cloud, preferably Google Cloud (BigQuery, BigTable, GCS, Dataflow, Dataproc).
  • Experience in designing and running A/B Tests and analyzing key metrics.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Java, JEE, and data structures.
  • Familiarity with modern system architecture patterns and designing event-driven mechanisms.
