About the position

The Engineering Manager (Spacecraft Software) at Umbra is responsible for leading the Spacecraft Software team within the Space Systems Department. This role involves providing personnel and programmatic leadership, overseeing the design, development, testing, and implementation of embedded solutions for advanced satellite technology. The manager will work closely with both technical and product-focused teams, ensuring high-quality execution of projects while fostering the professional growth of engineers in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the personnel and guide programmatic efforts within the Spacecraft Software team.
  • Guide the professional development and career planning of Spacecraft Software engineers.
  • Collaborate with project, product, and technical leads to understand scope of work and ensure high-quality execution.
  • Manage workload, assignments, support, development, and conflict resolution for team members.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and performance reviews with team members.
  • Ensure compliance with legal regulations, security standards, and company policies.
  • Represent team needs in technical meetings and collaborate with architects for informed solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency.
  • Interface with the VP, Space Systems to coordinate and report on departmental efforts.
  • Utilize agile practices to support sprint planning and track progress.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in personnel management.
  • 3+ years of experience in project management.
  • 3+ years of experience with embedded systems and digital design.
  • Experience with traditional project management practices and tools, such as critical path analysis and MS Project.
  • Experience with agile project management practices and tools, such as scrum, SAFe, and Jira.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and support a team of engineers.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • 10+ years of experience in personnel management.
  • 5+ years of experience in project management.
  • 5+ years of experience with embedded systems and digital design.
  • Demonstrated expertise in utilizing Jira to manage an engineering team.
  • Degree in engineering or a related STEM field.
  • Certifications in PMP, CAPM, and/or CSM.
