About the position

The Engineering Manager will lead electrical engineering packages for high voltage transmission cables in the Offshore Wind business unit at National Grid. This role involves managing a team of engineers and external consultants, overseeing project engineering and development activities, and ensuring successful delivery of multiple projects related to offshore and onshore electric substations and transmission systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage project engineering and development activities associated with high voltage submarine and underground cable systems.
  • Support the broader NGV US Northeast team in policy, technical assessments, and project development phases.
  • Manage all aspects of cable system engineering requirements including route selection, cable design, and installation for HVDC projects and offshore grids.
  • Own technical evaluations of projects and support economic values and cost estimations.
  • Oversee feasibility assessments, proposal write-ups, cost and pricing formation, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory processes.
  • Manage a team of subject matter experts for state and federal permit processes, e.g., BOEM Construction and Operations Plan and NY State Article VII process.
  • Deliver simultaneous projects while ensuring proper staffing and development of personnel.
  • Guide employees to accomplish performance objectives and foster a fair and trusting environment through open communications.
  • Train and develop workforce competencies and control development expense and capital budgets.
  • Accountable for delivery of engineering packages and team performance.
  • Pursue technical assessments to deliver economically advantageous options and project opportunities.
  • Provide technical evaluation of OEM proposals and advise on product selection.
  • Oversee consultants and engineers to support the Business Development team.
  • Lead technical analysis to support potential project partnerships.
  • Document, present, and report findings and justifications, preparing executive summaries or investment committee papers.
  • Support or lead on siting, permitting, and licensing requirements and represent National Grid interests at various levels.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields.
  • Seven to ten years of experience in submarine and underground cable system engineering, design, installation, or operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills.
  • Established relationships or working knowledge of cable suppliers and installers is highly desirable.
  • Ability to translate complex technical topics into business insight and articulate the impact of results.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex team interfaces to facilitate and drive project deliverables.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with recent trends in on-shore and off-shore wind, large-scale renewable generation, energy storage, conventional generation, and emerging technologies such as green hydrogen.
