About the position

As the Engineering Manager at Skillz, you will play a crucial role in defining the technical vision and roadmap for our next-generation eSports platform. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with product leadership and core engineering teams, tracking project schedules, communicating risk areas to upper management, fostering innovation, and ensuring the high productivity and career development of your team members.

Responsibilities

• Experience building scalable services, managing up-time, reliability, and cost
• Experience with Unity or other game engines
• Code maintenance and review experience in two or more languages in this list (Javascript/TypeScript, C#/Java/Go, Swift/Objective-C, Java/Kotlin)
• Hands-on management experience leading high-performing teams of engineers
• 30-40% hands-on responsibilities are required to be successful in this role
• Hire, retain, and develop the careers of the engineers on your team
• Coach and motivate your team to ensure high productivity and teamwork and help each individual achieve their potential
• Encourage and drive initiatives that promote innovation and technical excellence
• Interface with other internal teams to prioritize features and functionality based on the resources available and business priorities
• Clearly communicate any risk areas to upper management and come up with risk mitigation plans
• Experience building relationships and influencing stakeholders across multiple disciplines
• Experience communicating highly technical concepts to non-technical audiences
• Work with Product Leadership and core engineering teams to develop and track detailed schedules, dependencies, and critical paths

Requirements

• Backend Application Development experience (distributed systems / microservices / kubernetes)
• Hands-on in System Design. Experience in code maintenance and review using Java / GO / Python / Javascript / Ruby
• Gaming industry experience
• Hands-on leadership experience
• Healthy tenure (2+ years per role) + Strong track record of promotions
• Able to work in-office 5 days a week in Las Vegas, Nevada
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a technical field of study, or equivalent industry experience
• Starting Total Compensation: Base + Bonus (if applicable) + Equity = 1 number

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with backend services in Node, Java, Go
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases
