About the position

The Product Engineer at Jamestown is responsible for supplying shop drawings, analyzing material requirements, and making critical decisions regarding materials and methods to ensure customer satisfaction and successful product execution. This role involves generating production drawings and Bills of Material (BOM), collaborating with various departments, and maintaining engineering information for future reference. The engineer will also support tooling needs, conduct periodic project reviews, and interact with customers to guide them through the manufacturing process.

Responsibilities

  • Supply shop drawings to Sales and Project Managers as needed.
  • Analyze and interpret scope and material requirements.
  • Make decisions on materials that are not clearly defined in customer specifications.
  • Make decisions on hardware to be used for best fit and function to meet customer expectations.
  • Make decisions on methods to be used for Joinery and production process.
  • Produce drawings for Materials/Purchasing Department that become the standard for product production.
  • Generate Production drawings and Bills of Material (BOM) accurately and timely for Production and Materials/Purchasing.
  • Define if extra materials should be purchased due to unforeseen or material variables.
  • Run all parts through the optimizer to determine material size to purchase, balancing lead time and cost constraints.
  • Hold meetings with Production Planners, Project Managers, and Sales Personnel to ensure product details align with customer and manufacturing expectations.
  • Research special materials required to meet specifications.
  • Maintain and organize all engineering information for future reference.
  • Support Tooling Department with drawings of special tooling as required.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of projects on the plant floor to ensure specifications and requirements are met.
  • Obtain a complete understanding of engineering software and its interaction with shop equipment.
  • Review and utilize engineering files prepared by sales and proposals.
  • Review customer specifications and use them as a design tool.
  • Interact and communicate with customers as project dictates to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Requisition all necessary purchased and stock material.
  • Support R&D initiatives by making recommendations and adjustments.
  • Design products utilizing AutoCAD while following prototype and drawing standards.
  • Prepare customer approval drawings.
  • Assist manufacturing personnel as needed and guide the process to match previous decisions.
  • Work with purchasing to expedite materials when needed and make decisions on alternate materials.
  • Perform an in-house engineering run-off, debug, and resolve any problems before customer run-off.
  • Support jobs in the field during start-up and through the warranty period, making recommendations on installation processes.
  • Manage Reliability and Maintainability issues for assigned jobs to meet Quality requirements.
  • Assist in the training of new engineering employees.
  • Engage in project work.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and engineering software.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret scope and material requirements.
  • Ability to make decisions on materials and methods based on customer specifications.
  • Experience in generating production drawings and Bills of Material (BOM).
  • Knowledge of joinery and production processes.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with customers and team members.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in supporting tooling and R&D initiatives.
