About the position

The Mill Division Mechanical Engineering Manager at Graphic Packaging International is a pivotal role responsible for providing Engineering Project Leadership and technical support for 14 paper machines across 7 locations in the US and Canada. This position requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in the pulp and paper industry, particularly in manufacturing and engineering. The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers, overseeing the development, testing, modification, and creation of solutions to complex technical problems. This role demands expert knowledge in various facets of engineering, including capital requests, equipment procurement, and the management of installation projects. The candidate will also be responsible for managing vendors and contractors, ensuring that all projects are completed safely, on-time, and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, the role requires strong leadership skills to manage engineers and contractors effectively. The Mechanical Engineering Manager will develop capital requests, prepare bids, and recommend vendors, while also hiring and mentoring engineers and support staff. The position involves significant collaboration across teams, requiring excellent communication skills to build positive relationships at each mill and to confer with higher levels of management. The candidate will also be tasked with overseeing the research and development of new products and procedures, ensuring that all engineering activities align with the company's strategic goals. The role includes responsibilities such as preparing budgets, drafting proposals, and improving manufacturing processes. The Mechanical Engineering Manager will also be involved in establishing administrative policies and procedures, coordinating activities with other units, and providing input to the five-year capital and infrastructure program. This position is critical in ensuring that equipment files and databases are maintained accurately and that preventive and predictive maintenance needs are identified and addressed. The candidate must be willing to travel up to 50% of the time, which may include overnight travel by various means of transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage engineers and contractors.
  • Develop capital requests, RFP's, bids, and recommend vendors.
  • Hire vendors and manage construction and quality control of new projects.
  • Demonstrate organizational agility by finding solutions through teamwork.
  • Utilize strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrate professional presence.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and complete spending forecasts.
  • Build positive relationships at each mill quickly.
  • Complete projects safely, on-time, and on-budget.
  • Oversee the research and development of new products and procedures.
  • Hire, train, and mentor engineers and supporting staff.
  • Write performance reviews and solve internal issues.
  • Discuss and lay out project specifications.
  • Make detailed plans to accomplish goals.
  • Review, approve, or modify product designs.
  • Prepare budgets, bids, and contracts.
  • Approve expenditures and review and recommend contracts.
  • Develop cost estimates and draft proposals and reports for upper management.
  • Improve manufacturing processes and develop overall concepts for new and existing equipment.
  • Check technical accuracy of work and establish administrative policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Coordinate activities of unit with other units or organizations.
  • Confer with higher levels of management.
  • Ensure that equipment files and database are maintained properly.
  • Understand equipment operation and function to determine preventive and predictive maintenance needs.
  • Work with peers to achieve goals.
  • Provide input to the 5 year capital and infrastructure program.
  • Assist operations engineers and operators in troubleshooting mechanical equipment problems.
  • Design and troubleshoot process systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) plus years of pulp and paper mill manufacturing and engineering experience is required.
  • Experience as a Mill Manager or Mill Operations Manager and extensive knowledge of controls (DCS and PLC) is desired.
  • Must be well organized, analytical, decisive, action-oriented, and a team player.
  • Proven safety leadership along with working knowledge of OSHA requirements and ability to combine exceptional compliance with ease of operations.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office software; AutoCad, SolidWorks, Primavera, and SAP a plus.
  • Ability to identify mechanical, electro-mechanical issues, diagnose and solve problems, and apply this knowledge and experience to the design and installation of new systems.
