About the position

The Engineering Technician in Analytical Labs is responsible for conducting tests, setting up and operating equipment, and gathering data to support various engineering projects. This role involves building prototype units and testing equipment, maintaining and calibrating standards, and devising new testing methods. The technician will draft procedures and record laboratory notes, ensuring that all pertinent details are documented accurately. The position requires providing technical direction and training to other technologists, working in accordance with general objectives to improve and refine devices and methods as necessary. In this role, the technician will set up test equipment, monitor and measure instruments, and perform testing on breadboard circuitry, prototype units, production units, and electronic circuitry. The technician will support both technical bench and field set-up, deployment, retrieval, and repairs, which may require travel to remote site areas. Responsibilities also include conducting tests and experiments with new materials, equipment, and processes to develop data for specification call-out or to determine the suitability of materials for applications. The technician will gather and evaluate data for validity, accuracy, and completeness, locate and correct malfunctions in products and testing equipment, and perform post-mortem analyses to determine the reasons for failures. Additionally, the technician will draft calibrating and operating procedures based on comprehensive knowledge of product and testing equipment, maintain appropriate metrology standards, and calibrate equipment and instruments as needed. The role emphasizes safety and compliance with established health, safety, and environmental requirements, ensuring the protection of employees, the public, and the environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct tests and experiments with new materials, equipment, and processes.
  • Build prototype units for testing and experimentation.
  • Gather and evaluate data for validity, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Locate and correct malfunctions in product and testing equipment.
  • Perform post-mortem analyses to determine reasons for failure.
  • Draft calibrating and operating procedures based on knowledge of product and testing equipment.
  • Maintain metrology standards and calibrate equipment and instruments.
  • Support activities identified by Management/Engineering to maintain equipment reliability.
  • Work with engineering to establish test techniques for new products.
  • Improve and refine existing fixtures, devices, methods, and procedures.
  • Provide technical direction and training to other technologists and hourly employees.
  • Conduct activities in a safe and healthy manner according to HS&E requirements.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required to obtain and maintain US DOE 'Q'-level security clearance.
  • Four-year technical degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Two or more years of experience in a technical skills or technician role.
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant experience in testing and analysis in Analytical Chemistry.
  • Experience with various aspects of Analytical Chemistry such as bench chemistry and titration methods.
  • Understanding of NSC processes and operations.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products and plant-based Portal web applications.
  • Six Sigma Greenbelt certification.
  • Ability to interface effectively with internal organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication with customers.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and responsibilities under minimal supervision.
  • IT skills involving Analytical Instrument software and networking.

Nice-to-haves

  • Unique electrical, mechanical, chemical processing, and/or electronic skills and abilities.
  • Experience with specific analytical techniques such as Acidic Titration and Solution Analysis.
