About the position

Under the direction of the Technician/AutoCAD Supervisor, the Engineering Technician is primarily responsible for the development of civil and electrical design drawings in support of staff engineers. This position is located in San Jose, California. The Engineering Technician will prepare construction drawings for water system improvements, which include site and grading plans, roadways, water facility structures, groundwater wells, water storage tanks, pump stations, piping, water treatment facilities, control valves, vaults, electrical conduit, panel, and single line drawings, as well as water main installations including valves, services, fire hydrants, land base, and all utilities. The role requires creating construction drawings from a variety of sources, including field surveys, title and deed information, project engineer's field notes, existing as-built documents, GIS information, and verbal instructions. In addition to drawing preparation, the Engineering Technician will manage multiple projects and priorities while working cooperatively in a team environment. Participation in and support of the Company's Continuous Improvement program and projects is also expected. The position involves conducting field topographic/site surveys using a total station and handheld GPS unit, as well as performing utility substructure research to support drawing development. Other similar duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares construction drawings for water system improvements using AutoCAD.
  • Creates construction drawings from various sources including field surveys and project engineer's notes.
  • Manages multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Works cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Participates in and supports the Company's Continuous Improvement program and projects.
  • Conducts field topographic/site surveys using a total station and handheld GPS unit.
  • Conducts utility substructure research to support drawing development.
  • Performs other similar duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or technical/vocational school certificate in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CAD), civil engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Four years' experience using recent versions of AutoCAD and Civil 3D or equivalent.
  • Experience with civil engineering design.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D in the development of contours, surfaces, profiles, volume calculations, alignments, and stationing.
  • Knowledge of math, geometry, and algebra.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid California Driver License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical Version 2016-2022 and experience with electrical drafting.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater systems.
  • Knowledge of legal descriptions, easements, and parcel maps.
  • Knowledge of terminology used in civil and electrical engineering drawings.
  • Ability to conduct field topographic/site surveys using a total station and handheld GPS units.
