About the position

The Engineering Technician (Civil), Subsurface Exploration Crew Lead position is responsible for overseeing subsurface exploration activities related to the design of roadways, pavements, and highway structures. The role involves coordinating utility adjustments, directing site access, performing material sampling and analysis, and assisting engineers with advanced subsurface techniques. The position is based in Sevierville, Tennessee, and requires occasional travel to project sites and meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Assure proper utility coordination and adjust the subsurface investigation plan as needed.
  • Safely direct site access and layout of the subsurface exploration locations.
  • Perform subsurface material sampling, identification, and analysis, including recording observed subsurface conditions.
  • Assist engineers in conducting advanced subsurface techniques, such as geophysical surveys and investigations.
  • Interact with EFLHD personnel, client agency personnel, property owners, and the general public.
  • Obtain soil and rock samples using various sampling equipment and techniques.
  • Perform installation, monitoring, and maintenance of geotechnical instrumentation devices.
  • Operate government-owned commercial motor vehicles and drilling equipment, maintaining all equipment.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate various activities to accomplish assigned work in a timely manner.
  • Maintain discipline to ensure proper procedures are followed toward efficient, cost-effective, and safe assignments.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship and eligibility for consideration.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11, including subsurface explorations, geotechnical drilling, and utility coordination.
  • Experience in installing geotechnical instrumentation devices and maintaining accurate field records.
  • Knowledge of subsurface exploration concepts and methods related to highway structures.
  • Ability to effectively use machines, tools, instruments, or equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A.
  • Solid communication skills to work with internal and external customers.
