About the position

This job announcement is for a Engineering Technician (Civil) GS-0802-09/10/11 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rock Island District, Operations Division, Technical Support Branch, located in Rock Island, IL. This position will be filled at the GS-09, 10 or 11 level with non-competitive promotion potential to the GS-11, if selected at the GS-09 or 10 level.

Responsibilities

  • Process hydrographic survey data to establish and compute parameters for use in making engineering computations for yardage estimates and shoaling rates, and cross sections.
  • Prepare final survey reports documenting technical results of study/investigation.
  • Conduct periodic structural and scour surveys at locks and dams utilizing multibeam technology.
  • Troubleshoot computers, electronic positioning equipment, motion sensors on board survey vessels.
  • Operate and maintain several different state-of-the art hydrographic survey data collection systems.
  • Develop maps from processed survey data using Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and similar software programs.
  • Collect and edit single beam and multibeam data to assure accuracy by performing appropriate overlap checks and comparisons following standardized software processes of quality assurance.
  • Serve as a field specialist on hardware and software systems used to conduct hydrographic surveys.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to perform duties of position issued by the state of residence.
  • Where medical surveillance is required, incumbent must be able to pass all required physicals.
  • This position is subject to random drug testing in accordance with AR 600-85 and/or EP 600-1-3.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a required U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boat certification/license (within six months of starting the position) for the operation of a motorboat of 26 feet or less and must maintain this license.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain CPR and Basic First Aid certificate within one year of starting position and maintain certification.
