About the position

Vector Engineers/CTL Engineering is seeking a Technician | Inspector to join our Construction Services team. This position is crucial for performing construction engineering technician services related to earthwork, concrete, asphalt, and utility construction for various clients, including the Department of Transportation (DOT), municipalities, and private sector entities. The role is based out of our Shelbyville office, located east of Louisville, and involves a typical travel radius of 90 miles from the office, with limited overnight travel expected, usually around 10% of the time. The work schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend opportunities during peak construction season, typically requiring work on one Saturday per month. As a Technician | Inspector, you will be responsible for inspecting and reporting on various aspects of construction works in progress, such as concrete pours, rebar placement, and pipe replacements. You may also be tasked with inspecting and sampling construction materials, performing computations, and assisting engineers during soil and materials investigations. Ensuring that job site tests and observations are conducted in accordance with standard methods and project specifications is a key part of this role. You will also be responsible for preparing and maintaining project records and reports, and notifying contractors or project engineers of any non-conforming work. Responsibilities

  • Perform construction engineering services related to earthwork, concrete, asphalt, and utility construction for DOT, municipalities, and private sector clients.
  • Inspect and report on specific aspects of construction works in progress, such as concrete pours, rebar placement, and pipe replacements.
  • Inspect and sample construction materials as required.
  • Perform computations, plot data, and draw simple curves and graphs.
  • Assist engineers in the field during soil and materials investigations.
  • Ensure job site tests and observations are performed in accordance with standard methods and project specifications.
  • Perform lab testing and observation of soils, concrete, and asphalt as needed.
  • Conduct inspections for construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with state specifications and plans.
  • Verify plan quantities and calculations as per bid plans.
  • Prepare and maintain project records and reports.
  • Notify the Contractor or Project Engineer of any non-conforming work.

Requirements

  • Technical school or community college graduate preferred.
  • Associate degree in a related field with at least 2 years' experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred.
  • 2-3 years of construction inspection and testing experience, familiar with highway construction specifications and previous field experience required.
  • Knowledge of engineering, construction, testing, and inspection principles.
  • Knowledge of materials and lab testing as well as standard testing and observation methods.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform engineering and construction field testing and write reports.
