About the position

The Engineering Technician I position within the Department of Public Works is a full-time role that plays a crucial part in coordinating and conducting para-professional design and administrative activities for various city improvement projects. This position is essential for ensuring that projects are executed efficiently and meet the necessary standards. The technician will be involved in drafting a variety of engineering drawings, including preliminary, base, construction, and presentation drawings for storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water systems, paving, grading, and development plans. This role requires a blend of technical skills and administrative capabilities, as the technician will also be responsible for project administration for minor projects under the supervision of a professional engineer. In addition to drafting and design work, the Engineering Technician I will perform limited inspections of civic construction projects, focusing on streets, sewers, water systems, and related infrastructure. The technician will research city, county, and private utility files to gather baseline information necessary for project designs. This position also involves providing data and information to engineering and construction firms to facilitate the development of contracted projects. The technician will calculate volumes and quantities for engineering and construction projects and conduct field reviews to ensure the completeness of base drawings. Furthermore, the technician will be responsible for researching and responding to inquiries from contractors, citizens, and city employees regarding the activities of the highway and Water Department. Overall, the Engineering Technician I is a vital role that supports the city's infrastructure projects and contributes to the overall mission of the Department of Public Works by ensuring that projects are designed and executed to meet community needs and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Drafts preliminary, base, construction and presentation drawings for storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water system, paving, grading, and development plans.
  • Develops presentation drawings and initial site designs.
  • Performs engineering design and project administration for minor projects under the supervision of a professional engineer.
  • Conducts limited inspections of civic construction projects in the areas of streets, sewers, water systems and related infrastructure.
  • Researches city, county and private utility files for development of baseline information for project designs.
  • Provides data and information to engineering and construction firms to develop contracted projects.
  • Calculates volumes and quantities for engineering and construction projects.
  • Performs field review to check base drawings for completeness.
  • Researches and responds to questions on a variety of issues from contractors, citizens and city employees relating to the activities of the highway and/or Water Department.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • Some experience in surveying, drafting and engineering related areas.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Valid New Hampshire Driver's License.
