About the position

The Engineering Technician I position at Abbott Laboratories involves providing technician support for Engineering Department projects within the Transfusion Medicine division. The role focuses on the implementation and maintenance of Facilities, Utilities, and Equipment (FUE) that support the worldwide manufacture of Biologics and Transfusion Instrument test kits. The technician will work on various activities including machine shop operations, material testing, and equipment installation, while ensuring compliance with engineering, safety, and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technician support for Engineering Department projects.
  • Focus on the implementation and maintenance of Facilities, Utilities, and Equipment (FUE).
  • Collaborate with engineers and cross-functional teams to support validation and qualification of FUE.
  • Work independently to resolve design conflicts and ambiguous instructions.
  • Perform troubleshooting methodically to diagnose and resolve equipment and system issues.
  • Help install new systems or equipment and train maintenance staff on proper upkeep.
  • Maintain detailed records of tests, inspections, and repairs performed on systems.
  • Prepare technical recommendations and help implement improvements in processes and systems.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and two years of qualifying experience, or Junior college certification in a selected field.
  • Experience with technical troubleshooting and support of Facilities, Utilities, and Equipment (FUE).
  • Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interface with production and engineering staff.
  • Self-starter capable of organizing work and that of assigned technical persons or contractors.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hands-on electrical or mechanical skills from manufacturing industries such as medical device, automotive, or pharmaceutical.
  • Associate Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming (e.g., Rockwell).
  • Knowledge of CAD, AUTOCAD, and/or Solidworks.
  • Strong fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Familiarity with Maximo and/or SAP.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement tools (e.g., 6 Sigma, Lean, Kaizen).
