About the position

The Engineering Technician I position at Placer County is an entry-level role within the Department of Public Works, primarily responsible for reviewing and approving encroachment permits for work within the Placer County right-of-way in the Tahoe area. The role involves performing a variety of sub-professional engineering tasks, including construction inspection, plan checking, and project monitoring, while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills and a foundational understanding of engineering principles, particularly in grading, drainage, and road pavement.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve encroachment permits for work within the Placer County right-of-way.
  • Perform support to project management and construction inspection of public works projects.
  • Maintain and prepare project records, change orders, and required reports.
  • Compute and check subdivision maps and other engineering documents.
  • Assist in the preparation of designs, plans, and specifications for construction projects.
  • Perform field surveying duties and maintain field notes.
  • Investigate drainage and grading complaints and document code enforcement activities.
  • Collect and prepare construction samples for testing and perform inspections.
  • Provide engineering support for projects related to right-of-way research and location.
  • Assist in conducting traffic counts and speed studies.

Requirements

  • No experience is required for this entry-level position.
  • Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college in engineering technology, architectural design, or a related field is required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license may be required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in supervising is preferred but not mandatory.
