About the position

The Construction Materials Engineering Technician/Special Inspector position at Terracon involves performing field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of various construction materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. The technician will communicate effectively with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractors to ensure that project requirements and testing protocols are met. This role requires the transportation of material samples to the laboratory for further analysis, as well as the preparation and submission of detailed reports documenting findings and observations. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining and cleaning equipment, vehicles, and work areas, and may assist in scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites. Adherence to strict safety standards is paramount, and the technician will be expected to perform pre-task planning and report any safety concerns to management. In this role, the technician will conduct testing, observation, and inspection as directed, ensuring compliance with established procedures and training. Clear documentation of findings is essential, and the technician will perform basic data analysis to verify accuracy before communicating results to the Project Manager. The technician will also assist higher-level technicians with more complex tasks and maintain assigned equipment, ensuring proper calibration. Following safety rules and practices is critical, and the technician will be responsible for maintaining quality standards across all projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials.
  • Communicate with project manager, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractors regarding project requirements and testing results.
  • Transport material samples to the laboratory for further testing and analysis.
  • Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in written and digital reports for daily transmittal to the Project Manager.
  • Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
  • Assist with scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites as needed.
  • Adhere to strict safety standards and report any safety issues to management.
  • Perform testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and specified procedures.
  • Provide clear documentation of findings and results.
  • Perform basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
  • Assist higher-level technicians on complex tasks and maintain assigned equipment and related calibration.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience or equivalent training and related experience.
  • Experience with laptop computer use and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • ACI certification in one or more areas: Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, Concrete Strength Testing Technician, Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
  • Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.

Nice-to-haves

  • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in categories such as Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
  • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in categories such as Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist.
  • ICC certification in categories such as Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel - Bolting, Structural Steel - Welding.
  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI).
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in areas such as Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
  • Other national, regional, state, and local Materials related certifications requiring experience and written examination.
