About the position

The Engineering Technician II role is situated within the Division 9 Forsyth County Maintenance Unit, where the incumbent will provide essential technical support to the Forsyth County Maintenance Department. The primary responsibilities include assisting in the inspection of commercial driveway permits, right-of-way utility encroachments, erosion control measures, traffic control devices, and roadway construction activities. Additionally, the technician may be tasked with inspecting contractor performance related to guardrail repairs, long arm mowing, and roadside mowing operations. The Engineering Technician II will perform routine inspections on a variety of projects to ensure compliance with established plans and specifications. This includes submitting required records, reports, and diaries within specified time frames. The position requires the employee to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, often under extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, and high temperatures. The technician will also be exposed to hazards commonly found at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. To maintain compliance with industry standards, the employee must obtain and keep current certifications in QMS Asphalt & Concrete Testing, Roadway Density, and Erosion Control Certificates Levels II & III. Overall, this role is critical in ensuring that highway maintenance projects meet safety and quality standards, contributing to the effective functioning of the transportation infrastructure in Forsyth County.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the inspection of commercial driveway permits.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum from an accredited institution.
  • Two years of progressive technician level experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex inspections with limited supervision.
  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
  • Working knowledge of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in highway maintenance.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computers, software, and basic mathematics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in inspecting contractor performance in highway maintenance projects.
