About the position

The Engineering Technician III - Non-Residential Use Permit (RUP) Coordinator plays a crucial role in the Land Development Services (LDS) of Fairfax County. This position involves providing technical interpretations and evaluations of construction documents in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and departmental policies. The coordinator is responsible for reviewing and processing architectural drawings, communicating development regulations, and serving as a subject matter expert for non-RUP processes. The role requires effective customer interaction and support, ensuring compliance with safety programs and guidelines while contributing to the overall mission of protecting public health and safety through diligent review and inspection of construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical interpretations and evaluates construction documents in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
  • Reviews and processes architectural drawings and related documents for the issuance of commercial certificates of occupancy or non-Residential Use Permits.
  • Communicates development regulations to contractors, builders, engineers, and the public.
  • Supports the Elevator and Cross Connection Control Program.
  • Serves as the initial point of contact for customer inquiries via email and telephone.
  • Manages customer inquiries by providing direct answers or forwarding them to technical staff.
  • Advises customers on non-RUP processes and interprets inspection results.
  • Complies with the Library of Virginia retention schedule for inspection-related records.
  • Provides backup support for other divisions within the Building Division and other areas of LDS.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Four years of engineering technical support work experience.
  • VDHCD Permit Technician certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Expert knowledge and experience of the Planning and Land Use System (PLUS).
  • Experience in project management within building construction and/or code application.
  • Experience in problem solving, team environments, and critical thinking.
  • Paraprofessional building/engineering support experience.
  • Experience in Land Development, construction, and/or reviewing construction documents.
  • Experience in customer service and Land Development processes.
  • Experience in professional writing or creating reports.
